Monmouth County Firehouse Now Has Live-In Pet Dog

This Monmouth County town now has a dog living in the firehouse, adopted to give companionship to firefighters working 24-hour shifts.

DEAL, NJ — A firehouse dog is currently a real thing down in Deal, where the town's fire department just announced this week they adopted a dog to give companionship to firefighters working 24-hour shifts.

"The Deal Fire Department is excited to announce the newest member of our department, Gus!" said the department on their Facebook page.

The Deal fire department is mostly volunteer, but has three paid firefighters. Those three full-time employees must work 24-hour shifts at the firehouse. So the town bought Gus to keep the firefighters company.

Gus will live in the firehouse. He even gets to ride on fire trucks sometimes, NBC Philadelphia reported. No, he is not a Dalmatian, as you can see. Gus is a Cane-Corso mix, believed to be about three years old.

Even more touchingly, Gus was found as a stray dog living on the streets. He was being held at the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown, and that's where the town of Deal adopted him from.

"He will not only provide companionship to the firefighters, but will also help reduce stress levels," said the fire department. "We are thrilled to welcome our new four-legged friend and look forward to giving him the life he deserves."
