MARLBORO, NJ — The township has received a $450,000 state Department of Transportation grant for sidewalk improvements along both School Road West and Route 520, Mayor Jonathan Hornik announced Thursday.

He said the improvements are part of a pedestrian access plan to connect the areas "between schools, the municipal complex, library, and houses of worship, making it safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.”

The project will include the construction of sidewalk along School Road West across from the Marlboro Elementary School; the re-construction of 22 accessible concrete ramps between the school and Route 79; and will connect two existing sections of sidewalk between Wyncrest Road and Route 79.

New sections of sidewalk along Route 520 between Gordons Corner Road and Route 79 will be constructed closing the gap between the Marlboro Middle School and Truman Drive.

The existing asphalt sidewalk between Route 79 and Mitchell Court will be replaced with concrete sidewalk.

Hornik said that with this grant, together with the $447,000 Topanemus sidewalk grant and the $300,000 grant for the Route 79 Bike Path Project Project (both awarded last spring), "more than $1,000,000 will be dedicated to expanding sidewalks in the township and enhancing the walkability of our community.”

At the Township Council meeting scheduled for April 18, Hornik said he will request that the Township Council amend the budget to include the $450,000 grant, in addition to appropriating funds for the $209,528 grant for Robertsville Road Improvement and $172,000 from Monmouth County for the Tennent Road Walking Trail.
