Roads Flooded, Homes Evacuated, Cars Submerged In Hazlet

As Ida passed through town, police responded to over 50 emergency calls, including seven for water rescue.

HAZLET, NJ — There was severe flooding throughout Hazlet, as storm Ida made it's way through the state on Wednesday night, and two homes on Craig Street had to be evacuated, according to the Hazlet Township Police Department.

First responders were sent to the two homes as floodwater began to breech the ground floor levels., police said.

Many township roads were impassible due to storm waters and parts of both State Highway 35 and State Highway 36 were severely flooded between 9:30 p.m. and 1 a.m., police also said.

Multiple cars who were driving through town became submerged in the floodwaters. Everyone inside of those vehicles was able to get out safely and without any injuries, with assistance from first responders.

Police responded to over 50 calls for service between the hours of 6 p.m. on Wednesday and 6 a.m. on Thursday. Of those calls, 22 were to assist drivers and seven were for a water rescue.

As of Thursday at 11 a.m every abandoned submerged vehicles had been removed and there were no road closures, according to police. There is also no known lasting damage to township roads or the state highways that run through town.

Anyone who abandoned their vehicle or whose car was towed due to a flooded street should call the police headquarters in order to locate them.

Police advised residents on Wednesday night to stay inside and not attempt driving, adding that this would help out officers who were trying to respond to multiple emergencies.

Other areas of the state also didn't fare so well. At least one person died and two others were missing in Passaic, as floodwaters from the Passaic River inundated part of the city.

In many towns, cars were trapped in flooded streets and there were multiple water rescues, according to reports.
