Hernandez, who grew up in Old Bridge, won gold and silver Olympic medals for the United States in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her book is a motivational story about little girls, pre-teen girls and teenage girls finding confidence.

Hernandez did not compete in the most recent Olympics held in Paris, which just ended Sunday. But she served as an official commentator for Peacock's women’s gymnastics coverage, where her commentary made her a fan favorite.

Hernandez was born in New Brunswick and grew up in Old Bridge; she is said to still live locally in this area. Her family, including her brother, whom she is close to, also lives locally. She briefly attended Old Bridge public schools, and then — as her gymnastics career took off — Abeka Academy High School, a private homeschooling academy. Since age 5, she has trained at esteemed women's gymnastics gym MG Elite (Monmouth Gymnastics Academy) in Morganville, where her coaches were the renowned Maggie Haney and Victoria Levine.

Hernandez has popped into local Old Bridge businesses and schools before: In 2017, she made a surprise appearance at a 6 a.m. cardio kickboxing class at the Max Challenge of Old Bridge/Matawan on Rt. 516 (her friend is a member of the gym). She's also said to have been seen in local Wawas and diners in Old Bridge/Sayreville.

Hernandez is the first Olympian to come from Old Bridge, and the Township is extremely proud of her.
