MENDHAM/CHESTER, NJ — Nonprofit groups are keystone community organizations in both the Mendham and Chester areas. Fortunately, there is no shortage of organizations to volunteer or get behind financially, and that need your help.

Here are five outstanding nonprofit groups you should know about in and around Mendham and Chester:

  • STEAM Forward, Inc.: A nonprofit organization that helps children receive a wholesome music and technology education. Their goal is to make sure that all children in the modern world are empowered with the tools necessary for a wholesome and healthy life, including the ability to express themselves through music.
  • Color A Smile: Color A Smile is a nonprofit organization that distributes cheerful drawings to senior citizens, our troops overseas, and anyone in need of a smile. Every month, they mail thousands of new drawings to all the people on their mailing list. Kids, teens, and adults of any age can volunteer to color and help spread smiles.
  • The Seeing Eye: The Seeing Eye is a philanthropic organization whose mission is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of blind people through the use of Seeing Eye dogs.
    • In pursuit of this mission, The Seeing Eye:
      • Breeds and raises puppies to become Seeing Eye dogs
      • Trains Seeing Eye dogs to guide blind people
      • Instructs blind people in the proper use, handling, and care of the dogs
      • Conducts and supports research on canine health and development
  • Chester Mendham Food Pantry: The Mayor's Coalition of Community Service Organizations was formed in 1999. This committee met quarterly to explore the expanding need for these groups to assist community members in times of financial distress. This insight resulted in the creation of a food pantry in 2001. The pantry moved to its current location next to the Chester First Aid Squad facility in 2003. The pantry now serves over 20 families monthly through deliveries and 35 walk-in households.
  • Platinum Minds: Platinum Minds is a non-profit leadership and educational development program whose aim is to provide academically motivated males from underrepresented communities with leadership and educational development skills, enabling them to achieve and serve as positive role models in their communities. Platinum Minds was founded by Yvette Long in response to rising dropout rates, particularly among young male students from underserved communities with limited resources to sustain and encourage learning.
