NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit riders will be able to get a refund on unused tickets once they expire this summer, transit officials said.

Starting July 1, one-way bus, rail and light rail tickets will expire after 30 days. However, in response to backlash from state officials, starting on Aug. 1, riders will be able to get a refund for unused one-ride and 10-trip tickets purchased before June 1, the agency said Wednesday.

Refund requests are due by Dec. 31. Requests will not be accepted for processing before to Aug. 1.

The agency announced the new expiration policy in April; the tickets previously had no expiration date. The refund stipulation was added days after Senate President Nicholas Scutari blasted the transportation agency for the “blatantly unfair” policy and threatened legislation requiring NJ Transit to revise its new policy.

“If they want to sell tickets with expiration dates, it should be on the tickets or the purchasers should be informed at the time of sale,” Scutari said.

“That is a reasonable expectation for any customer, including riders who rely on the services of a public transit agency.”

The new expiration policy is part of a package approved by the transit board in April that will include fare hikes of up to 15 percent starting July 1 and subsequent 3 percent increases annually. Read more: NJ Transit To Raise Fares 15% On July 1

How To Request A Refund

Paper Tickets: Riders should bring unused paper tickets purchased before June 1 to a customer service office (see below) and provide contact information. Customers who don’t have their receipt will be asked to provide contact information and the last four digits of the credit card used for the purchase.

Web Tickets: Riders should print out and bring unused one-way tickets purchased on the web prior to June 1 to a customer service office.

Mobile Tickets: All unused Mobile App tickets purchased before June 1 that remain unused on Aug. 1 will be automatically converted to a credit in the amount of the unused one-way tickets in the rider’s electronic wallet in the Mobile App. No action is necessary to receive the credit.
