New Jersey American Water is replacing all lead and galvanized steel water service lines and is asking customers to help by identifying their service line material today. You can get started here. If your home was built in the 1970s or earlier, there is a good chance that you have a lead service line.

In July 2021, New Jersey enacted a law requiring all water providers to replace both utility-owned and customer-owned lead and galvanized service lines by 2031. The service line is the pipe that connects your home to the water main in the street. A portion of the service line to your residence is owned by New Jersey American Water, while the homeowner owns the other portion. (See Diagram below)

Historically, the material of customer-owned water service lines has not been tracked by water utilities, so completing an inventory of customer-owned service lines is a necessary first step towards replacing all lead or galvanized water service lines.

New Jersey American Water launched its Lead Service Line Replacement Program in January 2022 and is encouraging customers to self-identify and report the material of their service lines.

Customers can help ensure their homes don’t have a lead or steel service line by locating it, testing the material and submitting a short survey. If the service line is confirmed to be lead or galvanized steel, New Jersey American Water will replace those service lines at no additional cost!

At New Jersey American Water, providing safe, reliable water service is our top priority. Each year, we invest hundreds of millions of dollars into our water infrastructure so that we can continue to provide safe and reliable water service to you.
