WannaEat, New Jersey’s own food tech start-up just completed its first full year of operations. WannaEat is like UberEats for homely, authentic food, that supports individual culinary creators with technology, marketing, sales, payments and delivery. Basically it helps them with everything that they don’t want to deal with, so that they can focus on what they love doing… cooking. While doing that, WannaEat is creating a digital community where locals can easily find these culinary creators and order daily meals or cater their events. According to Priya Prakash, the founder and CEO, “We had an amazing first year with the business performing much better than our wildest expectations. What started as a twinkle in our eyes about 18 months ago, is now a real business, providing meaningful employment to culinary creators and helping foodies get access to fresh and authentic food.”

Priya Prakash, a self admitted foodie, came up with the idea of WannaEat during her own commutes between her hometown Millburn and Manhattan where she used to work for Capital One, most recently managing their data platforms. Like many other working professionals, she was challenged with getting healthy, home cooked food on the dinner table for her family while balancing a demanding job. She figured there was a way to solve the problem - a marketplace that gave the culinary creators the ability to offer fresh, homely food with authentic flavors and gave foodies the ability to conveniently order and get these preparations delivered to their doors. And thus WannaEat was born!

WannaEat launched in Millburn-Short Hills in May of 2023. Over the last year, it has expanded and now serves 10 towns in New Jersey - Millburn, Short Hills, Livingston, Summit, Chatham Borough & Township, Springfield, Maplewood, South Orange and West Orange. To date, thousands of daily meal orders and hundreds of catering orders have been processed on the platform. There are currently 35+ chefs on the platform with a combined portfolio of 1600+ dishes!! The platform continues to receive positive reviews from customers and chefs.

Reflecting on the last year, Priya shared “I can’t express in words the gratification I experience when speaking to chefs and customers. Chefs thank me, some while having tears in their eyes, for giving them the platform to feel more fulfilled in life. The opportunity to monetize their passion and skills means the world to them and they are thankful for WannaEat to be the wind beneath their wings. We have created a springboard for dreamers to become chef-preneurs, to realize their hopes, dreams and aspirations. Customers on the other hand share that they are thankful for the opportunity to get simple, homely food that is made with love. Food that is fresh and full of authentic flavors, that not only tastes good, but is also healthy and where every flavor tells a story. They are thankful for the convenience of good quality home cooked food delivered to their doorsteps. Every one of these conversations reinforces for us that we are on the right path with WannaEat.”

The business is poised to continue its growth trajectory this year with plans to expand to additional markets. If you haven’t already, please download the WannaEat app to check out the chefs and bakers near you and support local culinary businesses.
