Affordable Housing Open At Newark Apartments; Locals Have 'First Dibs'

NEWARK, NJ — A new affordable housing opportunity in Newark is taking applications, and as previously promised by city officials, local residents will have “first dibs.”

Officials recently announced that preliminary applications for affordable housing at 44 Irvine Turner Boulevard are open for Newark residents. The apartment complex – known as the Art of Newark – is located in the University Heights section of the city.

To be considered for housing at Art of Newark, applicants must complete a preliminary random selection application by 8 p.m. on Jan 30, 2024. Supporting documents and application fees are not required with preliminary applications. An application can be found online here.

Random selection will take place approximately 14 days after the application deadline. Prospective tenants will be notified about their placement on the waiting list five days afterwards. Applicants will go through income, household composition and asset verification process after they are selected.

In September, city officials announced that Newark residents will have “first dibs” on all affordable housing created under the city’s inclusionary zoning ordinance for 90 days thanks to a recent amendment to the local law.

“This is a step forward in ensuring that families who have lived in Newark generation after generation, and others who share pride in city residency, can stay here,” Mayor Ras Baraka said.

All available units will be listed on the city’s searchable database, NewarkHousingSearch.com.

As of Thursday, the database showed 247 property listings in Newark, with affordable housing ranging up to $1,700 per month.
