Newark Building Is Taking Applications For Affordable Housing

Priority will be given to local Newark residents, officials said. Here's how to apply.

NEWARK, NJ — Applications are now being taken for affordable housing at a building in Newark, with a September deadline for prospective renters.

According to a social media post from the city, 65 McWhorter Street is accepting applications from prospective renters. People can apply online here, or they can email [email protected] or call (551) 296-7770 for more information.

Here’s how the preliminary application reads:

“Please provide the information requested below in order for this Preliminary Application to be entered into the random selection process for the low- and moderate-income housing units for rent, which are located at 65 McWhorter Street in Newark, NJ. In this Preliminary Application you will generate your application number - please make note of your application number, as you will need that to obtain the lottery results. This Preliminary Application must be completed and submitted by 11:59 p.m., September 22, 2024 in order to be included in the random selection process for these units. Approximately 1-2 weeks after the above referenced submission deadline, the random selection/drawing will be held. On or soon after September 16, 2024 you will be contacted via email with information about viewing the random drawing. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. This is an equal housing opportunity. The development contains a total of 18 affordable housing units, where nine are studio apartments with net rents ranging from $800 - $1,713, and nine are one-bedroom apartments with net rents ranging from $835 - $1,813. The City of Newark requires a resident preference for these units where, after the applicant list is randomized, the City will require that residents of Newark be considered first for housing units in the order that they appear on the randomized list and, once all eligible Newark residents have been offered housing, any remaining units will be offered to non-residents of the City of Newark.”
