Car Parked In Rutgers Lot Stolen, Later Recovered In Edison

The Hyundai Elantra was stolen Friday after it was parked in the "green lot" (85 Rockafeller Road in Piscataway) on the Livingston campus.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A car was stolen Friday from one of the Rutgers University campus parking lots, campus police announced. However the car, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, has since been recovered in Edison.

The Hyundai was parked at 1 p.m. Friday in the "green lot" (85 Rockafeller Road in Piscataway) on the Livingston campus.

The car was owned by either a Rutgers student or professor, and they told police it was stolen sometime after they parked it at 1 p.m. Friday. The car was locked, and the suspects used force to get into the vehicle, said police.

However, the vehicle was later recovered by Edison Police in that town. Rutgers Police declined to elaborate how the car was later found in Edison, only saying that the Hyundai did not have GPS.

The description of the perpetrator(s) is limited at this time. Rutgers Police ask that anyone with information, or who may have been in the green lot at the time, contact the RUPD’s Detective Bureau at 848-932-8025.

There has been an increase in motor vehicle thefts of select models of Hyundais and Kias nationwide in recent months, said Rutgers Police. They did not say why those two models of cars are being targeted.
