NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The first marijuana shop has opened in the city of New Brunswick.

The shop is called Earth & Ivy and it is located on 355 George Street in New Brunswick, very close to Rutgers University. Their phone number is (732) 317-2992.

Earth & Ivy just received their recreational cannabis license from the state in May, and is now open for business.

Earth & Ivy is unique in that it is licensed to sell recreational marijuana only; most other marijuana shops in New Jersey are licensed to sell both recreational and medicinal marijuana.

The state of New Jersey said they will be giving out more "recreational-use only" licenses as is tries to aggressively grow New Jersey's retail marijuana industry.

There are currently 38 marijuana shops in operation across the state of New Jersey; thirteen of those are for medicinal cannabis patients only. But on April 13, the Cannabis Regulatory Commission just approved 98 new pot shop licenses, including 51 new licenses for retailers to be recreational-only dispensaries.

“It is a milestone for the agency and for the market,” said Jeff Brown, executive director at the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission. “Over the last two years we have grown the number of ATCs (alternative treatment centers) open to patients and overseen several of them through to expansion into recreational cannabis. Now retailers are opening exclusively to serve adult-use customers.”
