MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — Is your teenage son or daughter looking for a spring 2023 job? And do they love being outdoors, getting their hands dirty and working on projects to help improve our world?

Then they would be the perfect candidate for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps.

Applications are now being accepted for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps for Spring 2023. Their mission is to protect and preserve the more than 13,000 acres of open space owned and maintained by Middlesex County.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by the start date, and must be in good physical shape to walk, stand, lift heavy objects and use a variety of hand tools.

Work will take place at several Middlesex County Open Space parcels in Old Bridge, East Brunswick, South Brunswick and Monroe Townships, as well as other County open space as needed, and workers will earn $14.50 per hour. The hours scheduled will be Saturdays, from April 15 to June 3, 2023, 9 am to 4 pm

The Youth Conservation Corps is a seasonal job for high school or college aged students who maintain the County’s 30+ miles of hiking trails, work on habitat restoration projects, and litter patrol.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on start date
• Strong, enthusiastic, self-motivated, willing to work and learn as a part of a team
• Willing to get dirty and work outdoors in various weather conditions
• Ability to walk several miles and stand for extended periods of time
• Ability to kneel and lift materials greater than 25 lbs
• Ability to use a variety of hand tools
• Ability to read, understand and follow written instructions and maps.

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING: Introduction to staff, instruction on daily projects; familiarization with trail tools and techniques; familiarization to open space property; instruction on map and survey reading; tool safety training.

DUTIES:
• Litter clean-up, recycling, brush removal
• Trail marking, building and maintenance
• Mapping/survey of existing trail system
• Plantings and reforestation management projects
• Wildlife habitat enhancement projects
• Invasive species management and removal

COMPENSATION
$14.50/hour
