American Pharoah Will Try For Triple Crown History With Win At The Belmont Stakes

Teaneck resident's horse won the Preakness Stakes Saturday and is trying to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since 1978.

Let the Triple Crown buzz begin.

With a win in the Belmont Stakes in New York on June 6, American Pharoah would become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to take the Triple Crown and only the 12th horse all time.

The horse won the Preakness Stakes by seven lengths Saturday.

Ahmed Zayat, the Teaneck businessman from Egypt who owns the horse, told ESPN that American Pharaoh would “show up today.”

“Indeed he did. He is the real deal,” Zayat said. “He put on a show today. Nobody came close to him.”

Zayat bought American Pharoah at auction for $300,000. The horse earned $900,000 for winning the Belmont and $3.7 million for its career, ESPN reported.

American Pharoah won the Kentucky Derby by putting together a late charge on the homestretch.

Three times in the past four years, and the 14th since Affirmed, a horse has won the first two legs of the sports’ Triple Crown, only to fall short in the final race. California Chrome did it last year but finished fourth in the Belmont, losing by one and three-quarters lengths.
