"Black Lives Matter" march and rally in Dumont on June 9

Youth-organized event to include speeches and vigil at local church

A group of more than 120 young activists from Dumont have organized a march and rally, scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, 2020, in support of the "Black Lives Matter" movement.

Assembled under the banner of "BLM Dumont", the group "began with a shared desire for change, inspired by the racial injustice that is still prevalent in our country", according to a spokesperson. The June 9 event hopes to begin "an open discussion for improving the racial environment of Dumont."

The day's activities will begin at 4:30 p.m., with participants gathering at the town's Sorosis Park (2 Park Avenue). A march will proceed at 5:00 p.m. to Calvary United Methodist Church (185 W. Madison Avenue) for a vigil. The march will then return to the park, where speakers will share their experiences and insight regarding Dumont's racial landscape.

The group will also be selling t-shirts and accepting donations, with all profits and donations going to community bail funds, mutual aid funds, and racial justice organizers.

The overall goal of the event is to "open the door to greater discussions with local officials in improving the diversity and environment of our town" by taking "a stand against racial discrimination and police injustice."
