Flash Flood Watch Issued For Princeton Tuesday

The afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy downpours and winds as strong as 30 to 60 mph​.

PRINCETON, NJ — A flash flood watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Princeton area on Tuesday ahead of expected severe storms later today.

The watch is in effect from 2 p.m. through the evening on Aug. 13. The afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy downpours and winds as strong as 30 to 60 mph.

Rain and thunderstorms will hit the area around midday and continue into the night bringing periods of heavy rain of 1 to 2 inches and up to 3 inches possible.

The heavy rain happening in short spurts could lead to flash flooding.

"The risk of flash flooding is highest in urbanized and low-lying areas. Rapid rises on small creeks and streams are possible," according to the NWS.

The NWS' predicted forecast is scaled back from what they initially predicted, which included possible tornadoes and large hail across the state.

Here's a look at the upcoming forecast for the rest of the week:

Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. High near 82. Southwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., then a chance of showers after 5 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 68. Light northwest wind. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. Light and variable wind.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Friday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 66. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
