Flooding In Princeton Causes Rescues, Road Closures

A Flood Warning remains in effect through Sunday morning.

Heavy rainfall resulted in havoc on the roads in Central New Jersey, including in the Princeton area, on Saturday.

A Flood Warning is in effect for Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties through 6:15 a.m. Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Police in Princeton, in alert Saturday evening, said road conditions are hazardous and are advising residents to avoid all high water areas. "Do not attempt to traverse closed roadways," police said.

According to Princeton Police: "We are receiving reports of stranded vehicles attempting to navigate through high water. Quaker Rd. is closed due to flooding, and SH 206, Hamilton Ave, Nassau St., Dodds Ln., Sycamore Rd. Harrison St. and Alexander Rd. are experiencing high water in the roadway and are impassable in spots."

River Road is also closed between Kingston Road and Montgomery Border, police said Saturday night.

"Please do not drive through high water, or go around any road closing barriers," town officials said in a Facebook post. "Please call 911 for any life threatening situations such as power lines in standing water, or flooding with exposure to power outlets, etc."

About six inches of rain has fallen on the area since 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Route 1 North is closed at Ridge Road, and Route 1 South is closed just past Raymond Road, South Brunswick Police said in an alert around 10 p.m. Flood water is not expected to subside until Sunday morning, at which time the road may open, according to engineers from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

All Harry Potter events that were scheduled for the library have been moved to Labyrinth Books, 122 Nassau Street, due to flooding in the library.

There were "dozens" of disabled vehicles around town requiring water rescues on Saturday, police said.

One family had to be evacuated from their home on White Lane after the house filled with between four and five feet of water, according to nj.com.

Flooding was reported at the Princeton Junction Train Station.
