A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for four New Jersey counties Sunday as bad weather was expected to hit the area.

The National Weather Service issued the watch for Mercer, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties. The watch could expand.

The watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

A line of showers and thunderstorms will likely approach the region late Sunday. There is a slight chance for localized strong to damaging wind gusts with this activity, the NWS says.

Here is the forecast:

  • Sunday night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 3am, then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Monday: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
