NEW JERSEY – Prepare your umbrellas, New Jersey. It's going to be a rainy week in the Garden State as Tropical Storm Fred is expected to bring severe weather to the east coast, officials from the National Hurricane Center said Monday.

According to forecasters, widespread showers and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday through Sunday alongside excessive rainfall and possible flooding. In fact, officials say that up to four inches of rain can be expected in some areas by Friday night.

The National Weather Service has already issued a hazardous weather outlook for Hunterdon, Morris, Warren, Sussex, and Somerset counties, noting that “several instances of flooding are possible” on Tuesday, mainly in areas with poor drainage and vulnerable creeks and streams. The warning extends through Sunday.

Tuesday is expected to see patchy fog and cloudy skies throughout the day with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, although higher amounts are possible in the case of severe storms.

On Wednesday, Tropical Storm Fred is expected to traverse Delaware and head into New Jersey, bringing with it scattered showers, possible thunderstorms, wind gusts around 60 mph and temperatures in the low-80s. Scattered rain will continue into Thursday, with several rounds of flash flooding possible as well. Forecasters at the National Weather Service expect a break from the rain late Thursday, pushing temperatures into the mid-80s.

Tropical Storm Fred was approaching Florida on Monday with wind speeds around 60 mph, triggering tropical storm and storm surge warnings in the area. It's expected to bring serious damage to parts of Alabama and Georgia by Tuesday.

The slow-moving cold front could generate more rain on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but forecasters expect those days to be the warmest with temperatures reaching the upper 80s accompanied by humidity.

In addition to Fred, Tropical Depression Grace is moving towards the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike Fred, Grace is not expected to have an effect on New Jersey skies.
