Ed Russell, a 61-year-old resident of Toms River, New Jersey, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on his head in 2021. The surgery and radiation treatment left him with a disfigurement that made him self-conscious and affected his mental health.

After being told by two doctors that nothing could be done to fix the disfigurement, Ed was referred to Negin Griffith, M.D., reconstructive plastic surgeon at Hackensack Meridian Health Riverview Medical Center. Dr. Griffith listened to Ed's story and understood how the disfigurement was affecting his well-being. She carefully analyzed the situation and planned a complex reconstruction surgery.

The surgery involved inserting three tissue expanders under Ed's scalp and gradually stretching the tissue over several months. This process was painless. After the tissue had expanded enough, Dr. Griffith performed a second surgery to complete the reconstruction.

The surgery was a success, and the crater on Ed's head is now gone, with only a minor scar left in its place. Ed's journey to a full recovery was long but worth it. He has regained his confidence and is back to enjoying his life, including playing guitar and singing in an Irish band.
