Pig Farm Turned Animal Sanctuary/Public Nature Center In Bergen County To Get $1M Upgrade

An 81-acre center and sanctuary that teaches about the natural environment in Bergen County will get $1 million in upgrades.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Bergen County's Parks Department once transformed an 81-acre pig farm into a wildlife sanctuary, complete with nature trails, gardens, and educational science exhibits.

Now, Wyckoff and Bergen County residents will be able to connect with and learn about the local environment and ecosystem in upgraded facilities.

Wyckoff Township Parks Commissioner Roger Lane, on behalf of the Township Committee of Wyckoff, announced Wednesday that the County of Bergen has dedicated approximately $1 million for significant enhancements at the James A. McFaul Environmental Center.

In the 2024 County Budget, $105,000 has been allocated for the planning stages to accurately determine the essential needs and priorities at the Environmental Center. An additional $918,750 has been included in the 2025 Capital Budget for the improvements, said a Township Committee spokesperson.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to County Executive James J. Tedesco, III, and County Administrator Thomas J. Duch, Esq., for their unwavering support and commitment to this vital asset within the Bergen County Park System," said a town spokesperson. "Their efforts help ensure the continued preservation and enhancement of this open space in Wyckoff, enriching our community and safeguarding ourenvironment.
