BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Late last year, New Jersey's Farmland Preservation Program celebrated its 40th anniversary of keeping the gardens in the Garden State — releasing a list of farms being preserved around the state. With spring here and summer coming, they'll be visible again.

But there aren't many farms still being preserved in North Jersey — or are there?

While there are none in Hudson County, none in Essex, and none in Union, Bergen has a few on the preservation list.

"There are valuable incentives for landowners to participate in the Farmland Preservation Program," the state notes. "The program can help them meet their financial goals, providing them with the capital to expand their existing operations; eliminate or reduce their debt load; or further their estate or retirement planning. Participants in the program also are eligible to apply for cost-sharing grants to fund soil and water conservation projects.

"In addition, they enjoy limited protection from government acquisition of land through eminent domain; public and private nuisances; and emergency restrictions on the use of water and energy supplies. The Farmland Preservation Program is administered by the State Agriculture Development Committee."

Besides marking the program's 40th Anniversary last year, the state announced that it had passed the 250,000 acre preserved mark.

Here is the Bergen County section of the list released by the state.
