RUMSON, NJ — Police Chief Robert Boyer, appointed last month, has deep roots in the Rumson community.

"I am a home grown guy. I have had the good fortune of growing up in Rumson. I attended Deane Porter and Forrestdale Schools," he said in response to Patch interview questions. He graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional Class of 1984.

He has also been a volunteer member of the Rumson Fire Company since 1984 and has served as Borough Fire Chief in 2002 and again in 2022, he said.

Now he is Chief of Police.

And he said the department is working on promoting officers to fill the ranks of lieutenant and sergeant.

"The main focus right now is to keep things here at Rumson Police Department moving forward in a positive direction, and with the dedicated men and women of the Rumson Police Department, that is absolutely attainable," he said.

Boyer was sworn into office at the March 12 Rumson Borough Council meeting, surrounded by family, friends, follow officers, and a number of leaders of local public service entities throughout Monmouth County.

He was preceded by Rumson Police Chief Jeffrey S. Nixon, who had been named chief in July of 2023.

The Borough Council congratulated Boyer and thanked all the members of the Rumson Police Department, as well as the emergency service members throughout Rumson and the greater area.
