FANWOOD, NJ — Also known as the "Closer Grocer," Fanwood Larder is the perfect place to stop by when you're out of eggs for that cake you're baking, or need a quart of milk but don't want to go through the hassle of parking at a busy supermarket.

This neighborhood grocery store, located at 44 South Martine Avenue, is currently facing financial challenges due to rising inflation, according to its Facebook page. The store is now offering discounts to encourage more people to shop, and ultimately, keep the store open.

"Prices go up every week," Fanwood Larder wrote on its Facebook page last week. "Order minimums are doubling. Fewer suppliers are willing to deliver to us because our orders are small relative to other customers. As a result, we are spending even more on high-priced gas, and driving hither, thither and yon to keep popular products in the store."

Longtime Fanwood resident Eva Pfaff opened Fanwood Larder in Nov. of 2019 after the A&P grocery store closed in 2015. As a result, Fanwood residents had fewer shopping options in town. With the increase of people moving into Fanwood over the past several years, Pfaff was inspired to open the local grocery.

The "Closer Grocer" now asks customers to refer the corner store to friends and neighbors and encourage people to support the small business. If a friend or neighbor comes in with a customer the first time they shop, both customers will be entered into that week's drawing for a $30 gift certificate, according to the Facebook post.

The store is also extending inflation fighting discounts for the full month of May, offering five percent off orders that are more than $20, 10 percent off orders more than $50 and 15 percent off orders more than $100.

In addition, thanks to a price break from Paramount Bakeries of Newark on their flour panella, Fanwood Larder is selling their most popular bread for the 2019 price of $3.49 all month.

The grocery boasts that it is filled with local brands, such fresh eggs from a local Fanwood family who runs The Farmer's Hen, falafel pizza from the Scotch Plains-owned Falafel Eats, soup from Feaster Catering in Westfield and much more.

Not only does the Larder serve fresh produce, but they also offer options for people with various dietary restrictions. This includes an array of gluten-free and vegan products, all types of milk and more.
