Deer Hunt Continues Wednesday in Scotch Plains

The next hunting day will be Wednesday, Jan. 18 as it is pushed back in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. day.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The second day of the annual Union County Deer Management Program will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. day on Jan. 16.

The hunt will take place at six county parks and one municipal park.

  • Watchung Reservation (Berkeley Heights, Mountainside, Scotch Plains, Springfield, Summit)
  • Passaic River Park (Summit)
  • Lenape Park (Cranford, Kenliworth, Springfield, Union, Westfield)
  • Nomahegan Park (Cranford, Kenliworth, Springfield, Union, Westfield)
  • Ash Brook Reservation (Clark, Scotch Plains)
  • Oak Ridge Park (Clark)
  • Hawk Rise Sanctuary (Linden)

A total of 63 deer were already killed in the first day of the hunt.

Hunting in all of those parks will occur on Mondays from Jan. 9 to Feb. 6. In the event of a holiday (Jan. 16) or inclement weather on a Monday, the hunting activity will be moved to Wednesday of that week. Inclement weather on Wednesday would push the program to Friday.

Lenape and Nomahegan Parks will be closed on days when hunting is underway. However, no other parks will be closed during the conduct of this program.
