Funeral Set for Scotch Plains Teen Who Died in Car Crash on Saturday

Funeral services for Tyler Devaney will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood, NJ -- Funeral services have been announced for Tyler Devaney, a senior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, who died, along with a Berkeley Heights teen, after his car flipped over on Saturday in Plainfield.

“Our thoughts and hearts go out to the Devaney family during this difficult time,” wrote Margaret W. Hayes, Superintendent of Schools for Scotch Plains-Fanwood in a letter.

Services for Tyler will be held at: Rossi Funeral Home, 1937 Westfield Avenue, Scotch Plains on Tuesday, Dec. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery 360 Broadway, Keyport.

Tyler was born in Red Bank, grew up in Old Bridge, and has lived in Scotch Plains since 2008. He is a student at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, according to his obituary.

Tyler is survived by his parents Carol and John; his brother Brian; his niece Audrey; his two grandmothers Carol Duncan and Catherine Devaney; his aunts Patti Margolies (Ross), Rachel Duncan, Kathy Egan (Robert), and Carol Rechten (Keith); his cousins Jessica, Robert, Sarah, Michele, Michael, and Robert.

Tyler is predeceased by his grandfathers Charles Duncan and Richard Devaney; and his uncle Richard.

“It is never easy to cope with death, particularly when it comes so suddenly and unexpectedly,” Hayes wrote.

Counselors will be available when school returns to session on Jan. 4.

Second victim

Police said the other victim was a 15-year-old Berkeley Heights resident but declined to name him, police said.

A letter from Judith A. Rattner, Superintendent of Schools for Berkeley Heights Public Schools identified the second victim as Eric Hagen.

The car, a silver Honda, overturned around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Emerson Avenue and East 2nd Street in Plainfield, said Lt. Wayne Williams of the Plainfield Police Department.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that speed may have been a factor, police said.

Hagen’s wake will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at Ippolito’s Funeral Homeat 646 Springfield Avenue in Berkeley Heights. Funeral Service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 at Little Flower Church in Berkeley Heights. Burial to follow at Gates of Heaven Cemetery at 225 Ridgedale Avenue in East Hanover. Repast at Mount Carmel Hall in Riverview Banquet Room at 1:30 p.m.
