Gabriele to Discuss NJ Folk Music at the Scotch Plains Library

On Thursday, August 1 at 7 pm, the library is excited to welcome author Michael Gabriele to Scotch Plains discuss New Jersey Folk Revival Music. From the bawdy tunes sung in colonial-era taverns to the songs that echoed through the Pine Barrens. From “Guitar Mania” in the 1800s to twentieth-century studio recordings in Camden, New Jersey shaped folk revival music into an art form.

Performances by legendary artists like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan spotlighted the state’s folk revival movement and led to a flourishing community of folk organizations, festivals and open-mic nights at village coffeehouses.

Gabriele will trace the evolution and living history of folk revival music in the Garden State and how it has changed the lives of people on stage and in the audience. After a short presentation, a few folk songs, and Q&A, books will be available for purchase.
