Snow Updates In Scotch Plains, Fanwood: Snow Totals

Heavy snow conditions hit Scotch Plains and Fanwood hard on Monday and more is expected to come Tuesday. Here's the latest:

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ — Snow is expected to continue Monday night and Tuesday in Scotch Plains and Fanwood.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood Regional schools will once again have an all-remote day and will follow a single session schedule Tuesday. Read More: Another Virtual Day For Scotch Plains-Fanwood Students Tuesday

Scotch Plains Library is also closed on Tuesday, however, online programming will continue as scheduled.

Town Hall will have a 90-minute delayed opening Tuesday morning to allow employees extra time to make a safe commute.

"The DPW has been working diligently to clear the roads from snow, but there is still more work to be done. If you must travel, please take extra precautions during your commute and allow for extra time," said Scotch Plains Township.

Public Works (including Parks and Rec personnel and contractors) have been out since 7 p.m. on Sunday night and will continue plowing operations until all the roads are clear, said Scotch Plains Office of Emergency Management.

"Please allow them the time to get to your street as they have to take time to rest and eat. Snow has been falling since around 2 p.m. Sunday," said Scotch Plains Office of Emergency Management.

Fanwood Borough salt trucks and plows have been out since Sunday night and are asking residents to stay off the roadways.

"Travel is not suggested but if you have to venture out, clear all snow from your vehicle so it doesn't blow onto someone else's," said Fanwood, NJ.

If residents start clearing snow, they are asked not to throw snow into the streets. Fanwood Borough's Ordinance requires all residents and businesses to clear snow from sidewalks within 12 hours of daylight after it's over.

If a fire hydrant is near a resident's property, clearing the snow around it performs a public service in the event of a fire.

The National Weather Service has released some of the snow totals for Union County - last counted as of 5 p.m.:

  • Westfield - 17.2 inches
  • Elizabeth - 16.5 inches
  • Plainfield - 15 inches
  • Hillside - 13.5 inches
  • Rahway - 13.5 inches
  • Newark Airport - 13 inches
  • Union - 13 inches
  • Fanwood - 12.5 inches

Union County

Union County College classes will be held remotely on Tuesday and Kean University said most employees will continue to work remotely on Tuesday.
