Highlights from Week 4 of FSPY Men’s Basketball

One game goes into overtime in the matchup of the day

An overtime thriller was the highlight as the teams of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s 30+ Basketball League tussled during Week Four play on January 13.

Game #1

Winning team: SuperSonics (54)

Losing team: Ocho Macho (48)

The Macho Men held a slight edge at the intermission, 25-21, but the Sonics, led by their marksman, Brendan Ryan (16 pts, 4 treys), pulled out this back-and-forth affair. Rookie Joe Ruocco (12) and center James Patrick (10) helped the victors to their 2nd straight win. Ocho had cuatro hit for double figures paced by Tim Gray’s 12 tallies, and 10 each from the threesome of Craig Cichocki, Joe Encarnacion and Westley Etheart.

Game #2

Winning team: Lightning With A Splash Of Thunder (63)

Losing team: The Goonies (58)

In the matchup of the day, Lightning struck early, bolting out to a 13-0 advantage, only to see The Goonies answer with a 14-0 run of their own. Splash forged a 9-pt halftime margin behind the irrepressible Warren Lowe (33 pts), however, the stubborn Goons would not go away thanks to a scintillating 25-pt effort from Joe DeGennaro. Gritty Goon guard Gregg Carder (18) sent the tilt into extra frames by draining a 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation. Lowe and Thunder mates Troy Sims (10), Rick Harris (7) and Orlando Jean-Charles (7) closed matters out in the OT.

Game #3

Winning team: Team 8 (81)

Losing team: Under the Radar (54)

Sunday’s lone lopsided contest featured an offensive onslaught by the high-flying T8, who received balanced double-digit production from Gavin Ford (16), Rich Cobbinah (15), Mike Ruccio (14), Mike Pollack (10), and Rory Schulman (10). Team doctor Allen Maizes also made a house call with 8 pts. The Radar’s Greg Shea and Capt. Clay Torres notched 14 apiece, Eljay Aguillo tossed in 13, and Chris Vandenbrande connected on all three of his trifectas to finish with 9.

Game #4

Winning team: Draymond (57)

Losing team: RunAsOne (51)

Capt. Jamal Berry was an unstoppable warrior (30 pts), powering Draymond to its second consecutive triumph. First-year sensation Taj Belfield and vet Dave Berger both netted 10 in the victory. Fab frosh Bryan Stitt tickled the twines for 17, Capt. Jason Shann contributed 11, and Anand Desai added 8 for the Runners, who have lost three in a row.
