I-78 Paving To Begin In Union, Essex Counties

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Paving will begin on Wednesday in the I-78 westbound express lanes between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway in Union and Essex Counties, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced.

A single lane of the I-78 westbound express lanes will be closed on Wednesday beginning at the NJ Turnpike Toll Plaza in Newark, along with the express lane completely from west of Leslie Street where traffic will be directed to use the crossover to the I-78 local lanes, according to the NJDOT.

The westbound express lanes will reopen near the Garden State Parkway. The pavement preservation project includes milling and paving the roadway and treating it with a High Performance Thin Overlay (HPTO).

The work is expected to take several days.

Repaving of the eastbound express lanes was completed on Tuesday night and lanes were reopened Wednesday morning.
