Rain Could Bring Flooding For Union County

A combination of rain and already saturated grounds has caused a flood watch to be issued for Union County for Thursday by the NWS.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A combination of rain and already saturated grounds has caused a flood watch to be issued for Union County for Thursday by the National Weather Service.

The watch is in effect through 6 p.m. on Jan. 24. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected with locally higher amounts possible, according to the NWS.

There will be light to moderate rain in the early morning before becoming heavier through this early afternoon. It will then move offshore late in the day, according to the NWS.

Urban and poor-drainage flooding is expected to occur. Sensitive streams and creeks will also be susceptible to flooding, especially in areas with enhanced rainfall rates.

River flooding is also possible, especially on the Passaic, Rockaway, North Branch Rancocas, and Millstone Rivers.

Here is a look at the upcoming weather:

Today: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 3 p.m., then a chance of rain. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Temperature rising to near 57 by 11 a.m., then falling to around 44 during the remainder of the day. South wind 13 to 16 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 26. West wind 6 to 11 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. West wind 7 to 14 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 15. West wind 5 to 11 mph.
