Stay Off The Roads: Scotch Plains, Fanwood Police Plead

"PLEASE STAY OFF OF THE ROADWAYS UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY!" Scotch Plains Police say.

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ — Heavy rains from Tropical Depression Ida have already caused flooding to begin on Scotch Plains and Fanwood roadways Wednesday around 8:30 p.m.

The following streets are currently flooded in Scotch Plains:

  • Route 22 West at Union Avenue
  • West Broad between Hetfield and White Oak Road
  • Westfield Road between Morse and Evergreen Avenue
  • There is also flooding on the side streets off of Westfield Road.

"PLEASE STAY OFF OF THE ROADWAYS UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY! It is difficult for Officers to access and close roadways when they spending time helping stranded motorists that drive into unknown depths of water and stall out. Please stay off the roadways unless it is an emergency!" Scotch Plains Police said.

As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, multiple streets are also flooded and closed in Fanwood including:

  • Martine Avenue from LaGrande to South Aves
  • Westfield Road from Morse to Evergreen
  • Side streets off Westfield Road
  • North Ave at the Fanwood Library
  • Russell Road between Watson and North
  • Midway Ave and Forest Rd
  • Route 22 West at Union Avenue
  • West Broad between Hetfield and White Oak Road
  • Hetfield Road at Shady Lane
  • Rahway and Raritan Roads
  • Portions of Lambert's Mill Road (cars stuck in water)
  • Fenimore Drive flooded

Fanwood Police pleaded with residents to stay home.

"PLEASE stay inside if you don’t have to leave your house. Also, please do NOT drive around barriers or emergency personnel," said Fanwood Police.

A flash flood warning remains in effect for Scotch Plains and Fanwood through 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and a flash flood warning until 2 p.m. Thursday.

Just over 200 Union County residents are without power as of 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to PSE&G and JCP&L.
