Scotch Plains Boy Hit By Car While On Bike: Police

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A 76-year-old woman from Edison hit a Scotch Plains boy with her car on Sunday afternoon, according to Scotch Plains Police.

The 12-year-old boy was riding a Mongoose bicycle near the intersection by 7-Eleven and TD Bank in Scotch Plains when he was hit by the car at around 2 p.m. The woman was driving a 2012 Honda Civic at the time, police said.

Police said the woman was turning south onto Park Avenue off of Mountain Avenue at the time of the accident.

After hitting the boy, the driver stopped, and Scotch Plains officers and EMS rushed to the scene.

The boy was rushed to Morristown Medical Goryeb Children's Trauma Center, according to his mother who contacted Patch. She said he currently has a concussion and cuts to his spleen.

His mother said he also has cuts and scrapes on his elbows, knees and shoulders caused by friction from the road. He is currently still in pediatric ICU on bed rest as of now.

No one else was hurt in the accident, according to the boy's mother.

Fanwood Police recently launched an education program to remind drivers that they must top when pedestrians are trying to cross the street in a marked crosswalk, and they must wait until they have completely crossed before proceeding.

The state crosswalk law took effect in 2010. Fanwood Police said violators may incur two points and a $200 fine.

“Right now, this is an education program,” said Lt. Dan Kranz who took part in the education program. “We’re not writing tickets today. We are here to remind drivers about the law.”
