Shooting In Scotch Plains Leads To Attempted Murder Charges

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A Scotch Plains man is facing multiple charges including attempted murder after shooting his relative on Sunday, said police.

On Nov. 20 at around 7:42 a.m., police went to the 1700 block of East Second Street in Scotch Plains on a report of shots fired.

Sgt. Jason Everitt, Officer Damian Serafin and Officer Vincent Conti arrived first and found Bilal L. Williams, 41, walking in the driveway near the street with his hands in the air, said police.

Williams, who was waiting for the officers to arrive, was taken into custody without incident and a 9MM SigSauer handgun was found in William’s possession, said police.

Additional officers went into the second-floor apartment and found a 50-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest, left arm, and right leg, said police.

Officers provided aid to the man and Union County EMS and Paramedics took the man to University Hospital in Newark.

Union County Sheriff's Crime Scene came to help the Scotch Plains Detective Bureau in processing the scene and gathering evidence.

The evidence from the scene was removed, which included heroin and other drug paraphernalia.

Police were able to determine that both Williams and the man were related and living together.

Williams complained of stomach pain and was taken to a local hospital for observation.

  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, 2nd degree,
  • Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, 2nd degree,
  • Aggravated Assault, 3rd degree,
  • Certain Persons Prohibited from Possessing Weapons (gun), 2nd degree,
  • Possession of Hollow Point Bullets 4th degree,
  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (knife), 3rd degree,
  • Certain Persons Prohibited from Possessing Weapons (Knife), 2nd degree,
  • Distribution/Manufacturing/Possession with Intent to Distribute Narcotics, 1st degree,
  • Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, 3rd degree,
  • Distribution of Narcotics within 1000 feet of a School Zone, 3rd degree
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Disorderly Person’s offense.

This is an active ongoing investigation.
