Community Garden Plots Are Available to Rent

Plots in the town community garden are still available.

The garden is a collection of small plots at the Van Riper-Hopper House on Berdan Avenue.

Residents may sign up to use one of the 50 plots for one year. A few dozen residents signed up this week. The plots will be located in two spots on the property.

Victor Alfieri, a resident and advocate for sustainable living, is spearheading the project.

The plots will be built using a model known as square-foot gardening.  Square-foot gardening is the practice of planning small gardens and maximizing their soil space.

Each plot is 42 inches wide by 8 feet long for 26 square feet of space. Plots cost $60 to use.

The garden will be open from dawn to dusk. Teaching seminars and lectures on topics like sustainability will be offered.

There will be plots available for physically challenged and handicapped individuals. Plot owners may grow vegetables, fruits, and herbs, but are prohibited from using harsh chemicals.

A committee will establish rules for garden use. Members will be responsible for the space in and around their gardens.

Applications are available at the township planning department in the municipal complex. Applications are approved on a first-come, first-serve basis.
