WESTFIELD, NJ — Residents will likely see road paving and drainage work "ramp up" over the next month in Westfield, according to Town Administrator James Gildea.

Gildea offered an update on road and drainage work at the Tuesday night Council meeting.

Currently, Elizabethtown Gas is currently doing paving work on Coolidge Street, Cranford Avenue, Stevens Avenue, Wells Street, Sherman Street, and Benson Place. This work is expected to be completed by end of this week, said Gildea.

Elizabethtown Gas will then move onto working on repaving the entire stretch or portions of:

  • Fairacres Avenue
  • Harding Street
  • Salter Place
  • 4th Avenue
  • Marcellus Drive
  • Castleman Drive
  • St. Marks Avenue
  • Sherbrooke Drive

This entire grid will be paved by the end of the year, if not sooner and the second part of Coolidge Street is scheduled to take place in the fall, said Gildea.

The Town will also begin the milling and paving process on roads on the southside to northside with work expected to be completed by early August.

"It's a long list, 40 roads, that we are touching this year either in full or in portions," said Gildea.

Additionally, Gildea said the Town is working on drainage improvements by adding extra drains and inlets to address problem areas in town including at:

  • Cedar Street by Central Avenue
  • Bennet Place
  • Rahway Avenue and Dorian Road
  • Bell Drive
  • Coolidge Street

"Where we can, we are making these drainage improvements in areas we know are problems — that will obviously continue," said Gildea. "But I just wanted to mention it tonight for the public to know that some of those things are being done in addition to normal milling and paving."

Lastly, Gildea said striping work will be conducted on Park Avenue.

"All of this will happen very fast. By the next Town Council meeting on Aug. 13 we might be done," said Gildea.
