WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield Police Department said Tuesday that three men who were charged last week in connection with a Newark murder have also been charged in connection with the theft of a BMW that was stolen from a Westfield driveway the night before.

The Westfield police say that Reynold Henderson, 18, of Irvington, Tyson Armour, 19, of Newark, and Isaad Jackson, 21, also of Newark, were arrested in Irvington at approximately 4:06 p.m. last Tuesday, March 9, by detectives from the New Jersey State Police Motor Vehicle Crimes North Unit.

Police said that Henderson, Armour, and Jackson were observed exiting a 2018 BMW X5 that had been stolen from the driveway of a residence on the north side of Westfield at approximately 11:15 p.m. the night before. (The car had been unlocked with its key fob in it, police said.)

Westfield police said that after the men exited the BMW, they allegedly fled from detectives, but were arrested following a foot chase. Police said detectives recovered, from the car, a 9 mm handgun. During the foot chase, officers also recovered a discarded .40 caliber handgun, police say.

Reynolds, Jackson and Armour were charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and weapons-related offenses for the shooting death of a 22-year-old man in Newark that had occurred approximately 10 minutes before their capture, police say. All three were also charged with receiving stolen property in connection with the Westfield theft, the Westfield police said Tuesday.

Reynolds, Jackson, and Armour were turned over to the custody of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is handling the homicide investigation. They are being held in the Essex County Jail pending detention hearings.

Westfield Police Chief Christopher Battiloro said that a detective from the Westfield Police Department is currently detailed to the New Jersey State Police Motor Vehicle Crimes North Unit and participated in the investigation and arrests.

Westfield chief: Again, lock your cars

“We are doing everything we can to try to eradicate Westfield’s ongoing motor vehicle theft problem,” stated Chief Battiloro Tuesday, “and this includes assigning personnel to the New Jersey State Police Motor Vehicle Crimes North Unit to investigate Westfield’s motor vehicle thefts.”

Battiloro has addressed Westfield residents before, pleading with them to lock their cars and avoid leaving their fobs inside. He said during a forum last October that he saw some improvement, with car thefts "displaced" to other nearby suburbs.

Battiloro said Tuesday, “Motor vehicle thefts will undoubtedly continue until Westfield residents start taking proper action to protect their property," including “locking their vehicles, taking their keys, hiding their things, and doing their part.”

Statistics for 2021

Westfield has received reports of six motor vehicle thefts thus far this year, including three in the last two weeks, police say.

In all such instances, it is believed the stolen motor vehicles were left unlocked with their key fobs or keys left in them at the time of their thefts, police say.

There were a total of 26 motor vehicle thefts reported in Westfield in 2020, police say.
