WEST ORANGE, NJ — It wasn’t a flag raising ceremony, but flags were raised.

More than 200 people gathered in front of Town Hall in West Orange on Friday for a celebration of Palestinian culture, waving flags, dancing and enjoying food together.

Organizers said the gathering was a “celebration of culture and resilience,” and was not a “protest.”

West Orange council members Bill Rutherford and Asmeret Ghebremicael were present at the event.

A town-sanctioned Palestinian flag raising ceremony was previously scheduled for Friday, but was canceled due to “unforeseen challenges,” Mayor Susan McCartney announced last week.
