WEST ORANGE, NJ — The New Jersey Federation of Democratic Women (NJFDW) recently presented West Orange Mayor Susan McCartney with its “Peg Roberts Award” at their annual luncheon at the Pines Manor in Edison.

According to a news release from the township:

“Each year, the NJFDW honors women throughout the state for their outstanding contributions to both the Democratic Party and women throughout New Jersey. Public servants are chosen from three regions of New Jersey to receive the Peg Roberts Volunteer Service Award … The award is named in honor of former New Jersey Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts’ mother who worked tirelessly in her community to promote democratic principles and objectives. Previously the award was only presented to various women in Camden County until 2000. The NJFDW re-established the award in 2005 on a statewide level.”

McCartney was chosen for the North Jersey region this year. The Central Jersey recipient is Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred Scott, and the South Jersey recipient is Atlantic County Commissioner Caren Fitzpatrick.

“I’m obviously honored to be this year’s Northern region recipient,” McCartney said.

“I stand on broad shoulders as so many individuals also work equally as hard and are just as committed as I am to our core principles,” she continued. “I hope to be a worthy steward to the legacy and responsibility this award brings as we work tirelessly to inspire tomorrow’s leaders.”
