WOODBRIDGE, NJ — As of mid-June, NJ Transit has not yet chosen a developer to develop a 12-acre plot of land next to the MetroPark train station in Woodbridge Township.

"This remains in the procurement phase," said NJ Transit spokeswoman Lisa Torbic last week.

NJ Transit announced last October it wanted to convert the 12-acre plot into residential apartments with ground-floor retail. This is the lot just south of the Garden State Parkway, and currently houses the MetroPark outdoor parking lot, and two very large covered parking garages.

NJ Transit envisions transforming the site into a mixed-used commerce/residential development "that creates a new community of place," all centered around the Metropark station.

The two parking garages would ostensibly be torn down. NJ Transit owns the land. But the transit agency says it is working with Woodbridge Twp. to find a developer that is proposing an idea that matches what Woodbridge wants.

However, both NJ Transit and Woodbridge Mayor were very coy and refused to release details about what specifically they are looking for.

NJ Transit will ultimately choose the developer, however there will likely be a public comment portion before the project moves forward.

"During the selection process, we are working in close coordination with Woodbridge on achieving established project goals and standards which best serve community needs and interests," said Torbic in a statement.

"NJ Transit normally works in close coordination with local communities and welcomes public input on project such as this," she said.

McCormac said Woodbridge Twp. "has seen proposals" from developers, but declined to say much more.

"They are briefing us on progress, but any announcements on the project will have to come from NJ Transit," said Mayor McCormac on Friday.

NJ Transit is currently seeking developer proposals for the site, and is soliciting "Statements of Qualifications and Expressions of Interest."
