‘Always Has A Smile On His Face’: Bay Shore Star Student Athlete

BAY SHORE, NY — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.

This submission comes from Sam Lynch who nominated Jake of Bay Shore.

Lynch, Jake's coach, said that he has a "contagious" passion about running, which inspires others to achieve their dreams.

How do you know the star student athlete?

I am his cross-country and track coach.

What sport does the star student athlete play?

Cross-country and track and field.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

Jake was 3 x all-county, 3x all-division, and all-state in XC. He missed the school Sunken Meadow 5k record, set in 1978 by less than 10 seconds. He ran a 4:28 mile last year in the spring as a sophomore. He was the 2022 Suffolk County Division 1 Individual Champion.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

He has a joy for running that is contagious. When people see him finish a race, he always has a smile on his face. His energy has pushed his team to a League and Division Championship this year. We narrowly missed the county championship by eight points.
