The Bay Shore Historical Society will meet Thursday, September 19th, 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Bay Shore - Brightwaters Public Library (1 South Country Rd., Brightwaters, NY)
 Author and journalist Bill Bleyer will present “The Sinking of The Steamboat Lexington”. Originally commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt as he built his maritime empire in New York, the Steamboat Lexington eventually became the most prestigious steamship on the heavily trafficked Long Island Sound... But in 1840 a fire broke out on the ship, igniting poorly placed bales of cotton which destroyed the ship in minutes. Emergency rafts sank and rescue boats were unable to reach the ship in time.
The meeting is open to the public at no charge. Refreshments will be served. Masks are optional at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Library as part of COVID-19 safety regulations. The department provides fire prevention education and resources to the community. <a href="https://mercyhaven.me/COCKTAIL24" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Mercy Haven's 39th Annual Fall Cocktail Party</a> will take place on Sunday, November 3rd from 4:00-7:00 pm at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore, NY. This year’s event will bring over 200 friends of Mercy Haven together to celebrate the agency's successes, including development and expansion of programming to our residents.
We promise a festive afternoon filled with great food, cocktails and conversation along with chances for premium raffles throughout the evening. A resident will be our guest speaker who will share how Mercy Haven has changed their life for the better.
All proceeds from our 39th Annual Fall Cocktail Party benefit our housing with services designed for the recovery of populations in-crisis on Long Island. We currently serve over 400 adults and children from Westbury to Riverhead. Events like this are essential to our fundraising efforts to sustain our services and grow our reach. We hope you will join us in supporting some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
