Experience Colonial Life At Islip Grange Park's 'Living History Day'

Islip's family-friendly event will feature demonstrations of colonial cooking and military drills, a mock town meeting and more.

ISLIP, NY – If you've wondered if you'd enjoy living in colonial times, you'll soon have the opportunity to find out by taking a trip back in time with the Town of Islip.

On Saturday, June 8, the town's hosting its Living History Day at Islip Grange Park, located at Broadway Avenue in Sayville, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature demonstrations of colonial cooking and military drills, walking tours of the Islip Grange, a mock town meeting using town historical records, and a lesson on how to research your home’s history.

This event will feature displays and programs from organizations that preserve the history of Islip Town. The Sayville Farmer’s Market, Bayport Aerodrome, Islip Town Firefighters Museum, Islip Town Clerk’s Office, Town Historian’s Office and other organizations are all expected to attend.

The Town Clerk’s Office will have a display of veteran’s books for visitors to view and search for family members, the town said. Attendees can view displays from historical societies and living history groups, quilting demonstrations, colonial homemaking and military drills near the site of an actual Civil War recruiting camp. There will also be Revolutionary soldiers on site, children’s games from days gone by, a display from the Long Island Maritime Museum, a biplane from the Bayport Aerodrome and fire apparatus from the Islip Town Firemen’s Museum.

Two walking tours of the Grange buildings are scheduled with the unique story of the founding of the Town of Islip. There will be information available on researching your history and the history of your home.
