HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa might be just a short drive from the bustle of the city, but it feels like a whole other world.

Not counting the orchid trails or the waterfall or the scenic overlooks of the Hudson River, the Buttermilk Falls Inn and Spa is several attractions in one.

Animal Sanctuary

Millstone Farm is home to several pedigreed female alpacas formerly owned by Lloyal Nordstrom McMillan, the granddaughter of department store magnate John W. Nordstrom. Hard financial times forced the heiress to put her animals up for auction.

Llama Reserve rescued the animals which now live at the farm where guests can hand feed them. Insider secret: The llamas aren’t even the most adorable animals at the farm.

Other highlights to see on the working farm include an aviary house with peacocks, farm animals, an edible garden and honey bees.

They say the geese won’t hurt you, but the farm’s waterfowl tend not to believe you when you tell them you’re out of bird food.

Farm-to-Table Dining

It’s probably no surprise that Henry’s restaurant draws on the farm on the property for fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Dishes on the latest seasonal menu include salads and flatbreads made with farm fresh vegetables harvested from just outside the kitchen. The wine list is nearly as impressive.

Spa

While the spa facilities are being renovated, treatments are being given at scenic vistas on the property. The massage, facials and body treatments are so popular that it is recommended reservations be made at least 4 weeks in advance.

Inn

Though much larger than a bed and breakfast, the historic buildings at the property offer some of the same quaint features. Overnight accommodations include the balcony suite overlooking the Hudson, the Grand Laurel Master Suite that has a rain shower with a steam room feature and the two-bedroom North Cottage.

Buttermilk Inn & Spa is located in Milton, NY, just a stone's drop to the Hudson River. More information and reservations for the restaurant, spa and Inn can be found here.
