BEDFORD, NY — The day after Tropical Storm Isaias tore through the Hudson Valley, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power and thousands of roads blocked with debris, Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick warned residents clean-up will take time.

"If your driveway is blocked, please e-mail me at [email protected] and the Police Desk at [email protected]," he said.

Wednesday morning, 5,082 out of 6,685 customers in the NYSEG service area of Bedford were without power. There were 811 customers out of 1,053 without power in the Con Edison service area.

"This power outage is likely to be prolonged," he said. "Due to the widespread storm damage, NYSEG had sent in crews that were here yesterday and a crew worked through the night. We have two NYSEG crews assigned to us today and we have requested additional crews in light of the fact that Bedford was one of the hardest hit in Westchester County."

Burdick said he knew people were eager to have internet service restored.

"We apologize but we need to place our priorities on the safety of the community and the restoration of power. In many instances when power is restored, your internet will come back on," he wrote. "Please be assured that just as soon as we can, we will help to get internet service restored."

With safety as the town's top priority, the Bedford Highway Department is working with NYSEG and Con Edison crews to “cut and clear” blocked roads and driveways, get access to downed lines not presently accessible and “make safe” the lines (de-energizing them) so that crews can work on untangling or replacing them.

For those without power, NYSEG has made arrangements for wet ice and bottled water.

The town will have those items available this afternoon in front of the Town Offices at 425 Cherry Street – but please check back for the exact time.

NYSEG is making arrangements for dry ice.
