Cub Scouts replace more than 200 American flags ahead of Memorial Day

(Chris Desforges)

Scouts from Bedford / Pound Ridge Cub Scout Pack 170 and Pound Ridge Boy Scouts Troop 1 spent Saturday May 12th crisscrossing local cemeteries to make sure veterans’ graves each had a new American flag for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. The Scouts also placed new flags at graves for BHFD members.

Along with Katonah American Legion veterans Thomas Newman and Tom Cieslinski, the scouts visited Buxton and Union Cemeteries, completing their afternoon of service at the Pound Ridge cemetery with Pound Ridge Troop 1.

“The Scout Oath reminds scouts of their duty to country and our program teaches them to respect our country, land, and understand the freedoms we have." said Chris Desforges, the pack’s cubmaster. The boys and girls in the pack range in age from kindergarten to fifth grades across Bedford and Pound Ridge.

The scouts will conduct flag retirement ceremonies with dignity and respect. “What you are doing is part of something bigger. Scouts and veterans are performing this service all across the country.” said Bill McCormack, pack’s community service leader.
