KATONAH, NY — A good art exhibit will color the way you see the world days and weeks after, but the new exhibit at the Katonah Village Library might change the way you view the world around you for a lifetime.

The Katonah Village Library announced that fine art portrait photographer Nancy A. Scherl will be exhibiting her collection of photographs focused on solitude in the Katonah Village Library's Garden Room Gallery from Nov. 9 through Dec. 16.

The new photography exhibit captures a sublime isolation in a way that is reminiscient of Edward Hopper, but somehow more imediately poignant, given the shared trauma and life-changing solitude of a global pandemic that has not yet fully healed. Like Hopper's best work, we can easily see ourselves in the images, but are offered a distance that offers us the gift of an outsider's perspective.

An opening reception and artist talk are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

"In my work, DINING ALONE In the Company of Solitude, I explore the complexities of solitude, focusing on lone diners as a metaphor for describing the experience of being alone in public," Scherl explained. "The work spans three decades, culminating during the Covid 19 pandemic when the experience of solitude became heightened for everyone, world-wide. I hope that the photographs in this series will serve as an encouraging reminder that we came to terms with our aloneness by realizing that our vulnerabilities actually bound us together."
