The Harvey School’s varsity football team made two key stops late in the game to secure a 21-14 victory at home over the Dalton School Saturday, Oct. 10, the Cavaliers’ first win over the visiting Tigers in five years.

With the Cavs leading 15-6 in the fourth quarter, their defensive unit stopped Dalton on a fourth and four, giving Harvey the ball at the Tigers 31-yard line. Four plays later Harvey quarterback Tom Smith threw into the end zone where junior wide receiver Sam Bocklet made a great leaping catch, keeping his feet in bounds and completing the 11-yard scoring play.

With only four minutes left in the game, it seemed Harvey was home free, but the Tigers drove down the field and scored on a 1-yard TD run and followed it up with the two-point conversion.

The momentum seemed to be shifting to Dalton when the Tigers recovered the ensuing on-side kick with three minutes left and drove to the Harvey 30-yard line. But on fourth and ten, Teddy Little blitzed up the middle and hit the Dalton QB just as he was releasing the ball. Harvey senior Jordan Washington snatched the errant pass with 1:21 left on the clock, helping to seal the victory for the Cavaliers.

It was an odd-even battle as neither team scored in the first and third quarters while both teams put points on the board in the second and fourth quarters. Dalton went up 6-0 scoring on the first play of the second quarter with a 15-yard TD pass. Harvey was stopped on the next possession, but an excellent punt by junior Rafael Tapia was downed on the Dalton 1-yard line by senior captain Mike DePass. After Dalton went three and out, Harvey had the ball at the Tigers’ 30-yard line. Six plays later Little, playing running back on offense, scored on a 2-yard sweep.

Harvey got the ball again on its own 21-yard line with four minutes left in the half and proceeded to march down the field. The key play of the drive was a 21-yard pass from Smith to freshman Tyler Wagnblas who stiff-armed a tackler and broke several other tackles before being forced out of bounds at the Dalton 1-yard line. On the next play, Smith scored on a quarterback keeper, giving Harvey a 12-6 lead at the half.

Smith had his best game of the year completing six passes for 81 yards and a TD and rushing for 132 yards and a TD. Little rushed for 90 yards and a TD while DePass rushed for 25 yards. Wagnblas had three catches for 39 yards. Tapia kicked a 27-yard field goal. His clutch kick early in the fourth quarter padded Harvey’s lead to 15-6.

DePass, Little, senior captain Javen Stepp-Davis and sophomore captain John Sullivan led the defense. DePass had nine tackles and a forced fumble. Little and Sullivan each made eight tackles while DePass added a fumble recovery. Stepp-Davis had seven tackles and a sack.

Washington had five tackles and senior captain Joe O’ Connell had five tackles and recorded a sack.

Harvey’s record improved to 2- 0 -1.

Harvey Girls Soccer Stays Perfect

Heavy rains Friday, Oct. 9, did not stop the girls on Harvey’s varsity soccer team from getting another victory. The Lady Cavs improved to 6-0-1 overall with a solid win over EF International, 5-0.

Harvey came out of the gates strong and looking for the win right from the start. Goal keeper Kelly McMorrow wasn’t tested often but she rose to the occasion all five times when EF tried to strike. Defensively Jasmine Brouwer took the lead in helping to thwart each of EF’s offensive drives. “Jasmine has been good and reliable, to no surprise,” said Harvey coach Greg Janos. “She has done an excellent job leading the younger players on the field,” he added.

Harvey’s offense continued to stay hot and maintain pressure all game long, outshooting EF 24-5 and creating multiple scoring opportunities.

JoJo Greenwood and Charlotte Levy each had two goals while Sadie Albert came off the bench with a breakout performance, scoring a goal and earning the game’s hardest worker team award.

As Harvey continues to collect victories, the coach says he likes his team’s competitive edge. “I’m proud that the girls are staying hungry and working as hard as they have been. We still have a few parts of our game that we need to fine tune, but overall we are definitely the team to try and beat.”

The Lady Cavs have an away game Wednesday, Oct. 14, against Wooster and then play on the road again Friday, Oct. 16, at EF International.

Boys Soccer Loses to Chase

The boys varsity soccer team did not fare as well against Chase, losing 6-1 in a road game, Oct. 7. Harvey coach Alex Morse said, “Our boys did not match the Highlanders’ intensity and as a result found themselves down quickly.”

Poor marking in the back led to Chase’s first goal just five minutes into the game. The Highlanders scored a second goal off a rebound that hit the post just before the 20 minute mark.

While Harvey began to control possession of the ball, the Cavs could not position themselves to make quality shots on goal. They continuously attempted to play through the middle of the field, where the Chase defenders were strongest. In the 38th minute Chase added a third goal when Harvey failed to play a ball in the air, allowing for another break away.

Just before halftime, sophomore Isaac Cullity Vieux put Harvey on the board as he collected a loose ball and shot it in from 18 yards. The Cavs hoped the well-placed shot prior to intermission would give them a bit of life for the second half, but their hopes were dashed quickly.

Just three minutes into the second half Chase scored again after a turnover in the midfield resulted in another breakaway. The Highlanders added two more uncontested goals to finish the scoring. Jonathan Kushner made nine saves for the Cavaliers in defeat

Coach Morse was not pleased with his team’s overall performance. “This was our poorest effort of the season. We were unable to keep track of their top forward all afternoon. Our midfield turned over the ball continuously and Chase counter-attacked quickly, catching our fullbacks napping.”

Harvey next plays at Wooster School Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Harvey Volleyball Gets Comeback Win

The Harvey School’s girls varsity volleyball ended a nine-year winless streak Thursday, Oct. 8, against The Masters School of New York by defeating the Lady Panthers 3-2 on their home court in Dobbs Ferry.

After one of the hardest fought matches of the year, the Lady Cavs came away with the victory, battling back from a 2-1 deficit and taking the match with two consecutive wins.

Masters opened the match with a 25-22 victory in a nail biter. Harvey then fought back to tie the match with a 25-22 victory in the second set. After Masters won the second set convincingly 25-17, Harvey fought back to take sets four and five with scores of 25-14 and 15-8.

Harvey setter Tessa Knorr ran a “5-1” offense for her first time for the entire match. Sasha Fox and Sara Steinberg handled the middle hitting and blocking while Kat Panginis, Rebecca Teuter, Jordan Carnan–Raimey, Kylene Groff and Safia Gecaj took care of the outside hitting and blocking. Claudia Smith and Danni Qu anchored the defense.

“We had a great serving match with exceptional serving from Sasha, Sara and Tessa,” said coach Dave Ketner. “The match was a true team victory with every girl on the team doing her job extremely well,” he added.

Harvey’s next match is Wednesday, Oct. 14, on the road against Wooster.

JV Results

Harvey’s JV players, meanwhile, lost to Masters 2-0. The junior Lady Cavs lost the first set 25-18 and came up short in a 25-20 setback in the second. The JV had some great serving from Lily Tarshis and Heidi Lee who kept Harvey close.

Harvey X-Country Runners Give Strong Showing

Harvey’s varsity cross-country team saw some improved times from key runners as the Cavaliers placed fifth overall in a seven-school Housatonic Valley Athletic League meet Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Competing in the Watkinson School Invitational in East Granby, Connecticut, Harvey’s captain and top runner Rohan Cassells cut two minutes off the time of his first race this season. The senior crossed the finish line at21:16:52, two minutes off the pace of the first place winner. Jovell Forsythe and Nathan Ward also finished strong with times of 21:17.2 and 21:19.65, respectively. Forsythe was able to cut off four minutes from his first race while Ward trimmed three minutes off his first meet’s time.

Clay Hoadley of South Kent finished first with an impressive 19:17.47. Close behind was John Grimes of Chase Collegiate with 19:19:82 and finishing third was Watkinson’s John Coleman (19:27.10). Overall, Watkinson came in first with 49 points, followed by Christian Heritage with 62 points, Wooster in third with 82, Chase in fourth with 85, Harvey in fifth with 105 points, South Kent in sixth with 140, and Forman in seventh place with 147 points.

Harvey’s Jake Lewis finished at 22:47.34, improving his previous time by a full two minutes. While teammate Zach Leff also showed great improvement, cutting his time down by three minutes and finishing with a time of 23:12.93.

Harvey had three girls running. Captain Julia Mallon of Katonah ran her first race since coming off an injury in Harvey’s home meet. She finished strong with a time of 27:26.11. Kate D’Avanzo and Leah Wang also performed well.

Coach Mike Lauria was encouraged by his team’s showing. “There was truly a commendable atmosphere of athleticism at the Invitational, and we are excited that Harvey runners continue to improve their times every week.”
