HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The odds of accumulating snow throughout the Hudson Valley this week have fallen. However, wintry weather in the form of freezing rain or sleet may still make for a rough morning commute Thursday.

Less than an inch of snow is expected Wednesday night into early Thursday for northern Westchester, Putnam and the mid-Hudson Valley, the National Weather Service said.

For southern Westchester, rain and sleet is forecast to turn to all rain Wednesday night into the early hours Thursday morning.

Freezing rain is what may cause issues on the roads. When freezing rain hits the ground, it freezes on contact.

"Some of the most disastrous winter weather storms are due primarily to freezing rain," the weather service says.

To that end, hazardous weather outlooks have been issued by the National Weather Service for the entire region.

For Columbia, Dutchess and Ulster counties, patchy freezing drizzle may occur in isolated spots in the upper Hudson Valley Tuesday morning.

Wintry precipitation looks increasing likely for late Wednesday night through Friday. A period of accumulating snow and sleet Wednesday night should transition to a wintry mix including freezing rain Thursday morning — just in time for the commute.

Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties have a hazardous weather outlook for Wednesday night into Thursday morning, impacting travel due to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain.
