Injured Hiker Rescued From Waterfall At Mianus River Gorge Preserve

Rescuers used a specially equipped UTV and ATVs to bring the hiker to safety after injuring a leg in a remote area.

BEDFORD, NY — This weekend, first responders with the right training rescued a hiker in Westchester who was having a very bad day.

Shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, Banksville FD was called to the Mianus River Gorge Preserve to rescue an injured hiker. The hiker was approximately 2 miles into the woods and was unable to get to safety without help.

A UTV and ATVs were requested to assist with transporting the injured hiker out of the woods and Bedford Rescue 44 was requested to the scene with additional manpower. A rescue crew went into the woods on foot while other units went to the fire trail in the preserve to enter from the opposite direction.

By 11:25 a.m., the Armonk UTV (Utility 52) with Armonk EMTs, Westchester EMS paramedics and Banksville firefighters reached the injured hiker, who was soon out of the woods.

The Banksville Fire Department, the Armonk Fire Department, Armonk EMS, the Bedford Fire Department, Westchester EMS, the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services and the North Castle Police Department assisted in the rescue.
